Assam: Three youths have been allegedly arrested in connection with a protest by local residents to stop the felling of trees for the construction of a railway overbridge in Guwahati’s Bharlamukh area. It is alleged that the youth had made an ‘objectionable’ painting, which was prepared as a protest against the proposed cutting of about 80 trees for the construction of the overbridge.
On Saturday night, local residents formed a human chain and staged a protest on this issue. Meanwhile, the youth painted on the wall, in which the slogan was written, “Please save nature”. However, there was initially a wording on the painting that could be controversial, but it was quickly changed. The police arrested three youths in this connection early on Sunday and took them to Bharlamukh police station.
case under investigation
A lawyer who visited the youth said, “They have not been arrested yet and the matter is under investigation.” Meanwhile, Vice President of Raijor Dal Russel Hussain said that he was not allowed to enter the police station. He alleged that this action was ‘undemocratic’ and the families of the youth were not given any information about it.
After this incident, ‘Dighalipukhuri Bachao Andolan’ has expressed its solidarity with the movement of local residents of Bharlamukh. However, the movement has denied endorsing any political message.
Why are the local people protesting?
This entire controversy is about the fact that the trees to be cut for the construction of the railway overbridge can have a negative impact on the green wealth of the area. Local people are protesting against this decision and believe that the project should be reconsidered from an environmental perspective. Meanwhile, the police are still refraining from giving any official statement on this matter. (input language)
