Farmers will march towards Delhi
Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher on Thursday announced that a group of 101 farmers will resume their march towards Delhi from the Shambhu border point on January 21. Their aim is to put pressure on the central government to accept the demands of the farmers, especially the legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops.
Earlier, a group of 101 farmers had set out to march from Shambhu border towards Delhi in three separate attempts in December last year, but the security forces in Haryana did not allow them to proceed. Despite these efforts, the farmers have not backed down on their demands.
It is noteworthy that on January 15, a group of 111 farmers had sat on a fast unto death near Khanauri border along with farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. This is the 52nd day of fast for Dallewal. Farmer leaders say that they will continue their struggle until their demands are met.
Fast unto death at Khanauri border
Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, while talking to journalists on this occasion, criticized the central government. Pandher said, “We have seen and we also feel that the government is not ready for any talks. The decision to intensify the movement has been taken by both the forums (SKM-non-political, KMM). Meanwhile, a group of 111 farmers and supporters of Dallewal are fasting unto death at the Khanauri border. Concerns about his health are also increasing, as Dallewal’s health may deteriorate due to a prolonged hunger strike.
Security measures tightened on the border
Despite the increased security given by the government, this movement of farmers is gaining momentum. Haryana Police has tightened security measures at the border and invoked Section 163 of the Indian Civil Defense Code, which bans the assembly of five or more people. The farmers’ agitation has been going on at the Shambhu and Khanauri border since February 13, 2024, when the security forces did not allow the farmers to march to Delhi.
